There has been a bumper crop of dates in Sindh this year and the harvesting is now in full
swing. Workers for picking dates from trees have started arriving in Khairpur and Sukkur.
Thousands of workers men and women have set up camps near the dates orchards. During last
couple of years the date crops had been damaged heavily due to rains. This year, Monsoon rain
is expected and Bumper crop can be damage heavily.
The dates orchard owners are carrying out harvesting at a quick pace. In case of rains, the crop
may be washed away. Reports from Sukkur indicate that the owners of dates gardens are
offering prayers for completing the picking before arrival of monsoon.
- Generally, it has been observed in most of the farms in district Khairpur-Sindh Pakistan, the size and quality of dates produce is pretty good because of extreme hot weather of the current summer.
- The growers are very optimistic to receive a bumper crop better than last year. Only coincidence of monsoon weather at the time of harvest is a cause of concern.
- The growers have made comparatively good measures to cope with rainy weather in order to protect the fruit as well as the drying grounds where usually stays water due to heavy rains.
- Anticipations for a bumper crop are almost about to turn into reality but the chance of glut or oversupply in the domestic market cannot be ruled out. This might drive the prices down to a desperate level which usually happen in that situation.
